Words on Wednesday: KOI NOBORI

#1 here. This time of year in Japan, and through early May, you will see everywhere carp streamers ("Koi Nobori") flying from roofs and poles. They are a celebration of the boys in the house, so that they may grow up big and strong. We happen to have a small set (they can be enormous!) that I bought in Tokyo a couple of years ago and it went up today in celebration of the three Poupounette boys, Tommy, Yuusuke (Yuu-Chan) and Ebisu (Bibi-Chan).

  3. To answer Lola's question, there is a whole different festival for girls, with very elaborate doll displays. That's in March.

  15. Oooh - we saw some of these at our nature reserve today! There always seems to be humans there flying kites at the first part of the nature reserve as it's a bit of a wind-trap at places - and when we turned up today one of them had a string of these! Wow - now we know what it was all about - cool! Schnauzer snuggles - JD and Max.
