So, off we went to Dr. C's and it didn't take her long to see what the problem was. I have the beginnings of a cruciate ligament injury on my hind left knee. The ligament is not torn and the damage at this stage seems fairly minimal, but Dr. C said that if we don't handle the problem properly now, it could lead to big trouble later. So... I am on anti-inflammatories (Rymadyl) for the next month, possibly a little longer. And... SOB!!!!!!!!... complete rest for two weeks! I am absolutely not allowed to play! No Frisbee, no tennis ball, NOTHING!!!! Poor #1 is desperately scratching her head to try and figure out how to keep us both sane. I can go on walks (on a lead), even trot about, but nothing that might further damage the ligament.
As for how it happened, we don't really know but there are a couple of possible causes. It is something that is seen in dogs that do extreme sports, so I may have hurt myslf catching the Frisbee or tennis ball. It can also be caused by impact, and little Fernant does have a habit of barrelling into me and often grabbing my leg between his jaws as I am running. Needless to say, the neighbours have been asked to keep him away from for the next little while.
I have also lost almost two kilos since I was last weighed, so my rations have been increased. As you can imagine, I am getting even more cuddles than usual.
Thank you for all your good thoughts. We are feeling positive and I hope to be back to running around sometime in July. In the meantime, here are some photos of me that were taken on Sunday by our photographer friend, Mr. JLD:
Oh Tommy, I hope your leg heals up quickly! Bed rest can be such a bore. And although I know Fernant can be a bit too rambunctious, I am sure he means well and will miss you. In the mean time, enjoy those extra cuddles! We're sending you some healing love from California!
ReplyDeleteTommy..we are so sorry to hear about you leg injury. Make sure you take your medication and rest up. We are sure the lots of cuddles you will have will make up fo not running.
ReplyDeleteWhat fabulous photos of you. we hope you are soon all mended.

Poor you, Tommy. I know all about naughty kneecaps and a Britcat cousin had a cruciated ligament and was on major bed rest. This is going to be so hard for you not to run around. I can thoroughly recommend cosequin/seraquin tablets which have glucosamine inside and also a diet high in fish - especially oily ones as that really helps the joints and builds up muscle. I shall tell Äiti to go fishing and send you a whole salmon. Minus the bits we have to eat though. Lots of snuggles to you.
ReplyDeleteTommy, we feel for you! That will be so hard for you and #1. But better to rest now and prevent the problem getting worse! We hope the two weeks go by quickly ....
ReplyDeletetake care

All we are going to say is "MORE snuggles please." That is the only remedy for not being able to go outside to play.

Poor Tommy! :( I hope your leg gets better soon, so you can run around again!
ReplyDeletePoor Tommy !! Does #1 allow really big beef bones? They can make hours and hours of quiet fun.
ReplyDeleteGet better soon...Joyce in cold..10C PEI...not my idea of summer...
Tommy, my mum says her rottie Max had a knee reconstruction and she was just fine eventually. You'll be okay because you don't even need surgery.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your bum knee Tommy! Hope you get a lot of rest. It will be boring for you but better than surgery. Maybe #1 can do some clicker training tricks with you to keep your mind occupied. We think you look very handsome in your new photos.
ReplyDeleteYour friends,
Niamh & Ambrose
Hope you will be on the mend soon Tommy. Beeing under the weather is no fun
ReplyDeleteCrystal, Amber, Jasper and Dino
Take care, Tommy! I'm sure that, even if you don't understand all the details of the prognosis, you know #1 is doing what's best for you.
ReplyDeleteGosh what a challenge for you Tommy-to stay low key for a few weeks ! We hope you mend quickly by following the doctor's orders :)

#1 will have to get you a little bell to ring for attention while you are relaxing and resting your poor leg Tom. Enjoy the extra rations while you can get them!
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
Oh Tommy! Our purrs! That is a hard thing for a dog to do but the CL is a bad thing if it gets really bad. I think the cats should sit on your regularly to keep you from running too much.
ReplyDeleteTommy, we are sending HUGE healing purrs for yoo, sweet boy. We know how much yoo love yoor frisbee and will miss playing. Get well soon buddy.
ReplyDeleteWe kitties have used Cosequin with good results. A woofie mum used to see used Hylasport for Canines from Horsetech. We are sure #1 would only use the best vet for you so we are just offering observations. The one good thing is that you get to eat more! Yay! We will be praying for you, precious boy and will continue to do so until you are as good as new. Our love to you.
ReplyDelete#1 really has her job cut out for her, keeping you resting! Bibi, Sei and Tama will have to sit on you for the next two weeks!
ReplyDeleteTommy, we'll pop over in shifts to snuggle and keep you occupied with all our tall tales! Felix tore his CL so he says you MUST rest, you don't want to have surgery like he did! Although he is good as new now.
ReplyDelete"Good" being a relative term.
PURRS!
Oh, Tommy, we are so sorry we missed yesterday's post. You know we would have been wooing up those great sibe vibes for you - so that is what we are doing now. Mom said that injury can also be caused by quick stops and turns, especially on wet grass. You really have had quite a workout lately with Fernand and now with your new friend Jimmy. You just may have overdone it. We hope your injury heals very, very well so there are no future problems. Hugs to you, pal.

Tommy so sorry to hear your leg is ouchie. I hope you feel better SOON!
ReplyDeleteOh Tommy...we are so sorry about your injury... We are sure your #1 will handle the problem properly so you will recover quickly. Though, it does sound hard not to be able to play for 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteBut it is only 2 weeks..it will pass soon. We hope you get well very very soon!!
Oh Tommy! I'm so sorry to hear you got hurt. I know it will be hard to rest for two weeks, but it's better than injuring your leg more. I'm sure #1 will be able to keep you happy (and fed!) during that time. Be careful!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your injury Tommy! I have no doubt that #1 will dream up a wonderful activity for you while you are 'resting'. Your new pictures are gorgeous! You have such kind eyes. Keep your head up Tommy, the time will go quickly and you will be flying with your frisbee before you know it!
ReplyDeleteTommy, we hope you heal quickly so you can get back to playing!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Tommy!
ReplyDeleteJust take it easy and you will be like new in no time!
Paws crossed!

Oh Tommy, we are sorry to hear about the 'bedrest' orders and the hitch in your get-a-long! We hope the rest and the meds help!
ReplyDeleteBedrest is good! But, so is extra cuddles and vittles. Seems to me, you're leading a cat's life! Purrs from Prancer for fast healing.
