Sad on SEIturday - Goodbye Sweet Prancer Pie

Sei-Chan: We are sad today, Dear Friends. We found out last night that our dear friend, Prancer Pie, had gone to the Bridge. We just loved this little guy who had been found by his Mom in a field, badly burned. Prancer became ill just over a couple of weeks ago, and it turned out he had a nasty abscess which was removed. Unfortunately, the vet gave him an injection of a long-lasting antibiotic called Convenia and he had a bad reaction to it that eventually proved fatal. So, please everyone, remember this so that our good buddy will not have suffered for nothing. If your vet ever wants to give you this drug, JUST SAY NO. There have been too many cases of adverse reactions and fatalities, and it's not worth even thinking about it. We really hope that what happened to Prancer will save other kitties' lives.

PRANCER PIE

We are all in deep shock and having a quiet and reflective day here at Poupounette Central

Remember to snuggle in tight with your loved ones today.

  4. It breaks my heart. And my baby had Convenia when she had her cold. I have to wait 60 days to pray nothing happens to her.

  5. My human and I were so upset over this. My human will never, ever allow a vet to give us a Convenia injection.

  6. We are incredibly sad about Prancer Pie too, it was such a shock.
However two weeks ago, Sampo's life was saved by convenia - he had been very sick which I chose not to put on the blog. An infection came on very fast and he was fading in a really scary way. Yes, I am now aware of the 65 day period. And many of us have had it for things from bites to infections. There have been no adverse reactions reported here in Finland, and for that we are massively thankful.

  7. I assume none of us are pharmacologists, and I think it is unwise to diagnose a cause of death in the absence of medical records and/or expertise. I am terribly, terribly sad about Prancer Pie but very leery of long-distance diagnoses.

Spitty had Covenia following treatment an abscessed anal gland, and he experienced no ill effects. Frankly, I might have to choose that treatment again as I am not at all sure I could get a pill or liquid down him.

All I am saying is that I fear it may be terribly upsetting to Prancer Pie's Mommy to be reading all this speculation about the reason for his very sad departure to the Bridge. XOXOXOXO

  9. Many drugs have some side-effects but these are generally counteracted by their benefits. There is, however, a tipping point where the consequences are too often too unpleasant. Throughout history, drug companies have fought tooth and nail to stop having their highly profitable drugs taken off the market, even when they have been shown to be at or past that tipping point. What I have read about this drug seems to indicate a problem in more cases than I personally feel comfortable with. It is also, at the very least, the responsibility of veterinarians to make their clients aware of possible risk, and that is too often not the case. It is then ultimately up to each of us to make the decision we are comfortable with, based on what we know. Some may be willing to take the risk and others not. That is what I believe, and I also believe that it is my prerogative to express it in my blog.

  13. I, too, am so very sorry for the loss of Prancer Pie. It must be so hard for his mom. What a wonderful cat to lose – especially like that.

I had never heard of Convenia until just this Friday at Prancer Pie’s passing. But having checked my records... just two days prior Jackie Boy, our cat, was giving it. He seems to be holding his own now but we can't tell if he is not well now because of the cold he still has or if it is the med. We are very concerned for him. He is still eating pretty well, drinking some and doesn’t have diarrhea. We checked his gums and they are pink. We are praying he will be okay. Say a prayer, too? Thank you.

We did call our Vet. yesterday to discuss Convenia. She said the side effects were very rare... but they are not rare enough for us to ever us it again. Thank you for your post about it and getting the word out to others.
