Tommy's Thankful Thursday

Tom: Today, I would like to say how Thankful I am not just for my great life here at Poupounette Central, but also for my friends, especially Mad Fernant who is spending a couple of days with us. You see, we call him Mad Fernant but we must never forget how close he came to being "No Fernant." For those of you who may not know or remember, this is his story: Several years ago, a three-month old golden lab puppy was brought into a vet clinic a couple of hours west of here by a supposedly reputable breeder. The puppy had kennel cough which is not life-threatening in any way, but which takes several months to get over. The breeder requested that the puppy be put to sleep because "by the time he was over the kennel cough, he would be too old to sell as a puppy." The vet was a friend of a friend of #1's and was appalled. She said yes, took the puppy to the back, filled in the paperwork and the breeder left. She then removed the microchip from the pup, so there would be no traceability and took the pup home, determined to find him a home.

Our neighbours had lost their lab mix several years earlier and #1 felt they were ready for a new pup, so a trap was sprung and the lovely vet lady brought the little guy to meet them:

Well, they were smitten. Who wouldn't fall for this face?

They called him Fernant. And so started our friendship:

As expected, the kennel cough went away in a few months and he developed into a strapping, totally mad lab! He often stays over at our place and feels quite at ease with all of us…

When Violette was all alone in her field, before she became our sister, Fernant was one of her best friends:

And here are some pics of us yesterday. As you can see, he is still totally mad:

Some things haven't changed at all:

then...

now...

But we always have the best time together!

We're all thankful you were rescued, Buddy!

  2. I hear of more pets that have been rescued by vets when the humans wanted them put down. As much as I dislike going to the clinic, I have to give props to the vets who rescue.

  11. Isn't that horrible and selfish the breeder wanted to destroy a perfectly good animal because it didn't suit his purpose to keep him alive. He should be banded from breeding. Anyway, what a funny and lovely dog Fernant turned out to be! The mom had a yellow lab when she was in college and he was the best dog.

I remember this story well. Fernant was a lucky dog indeed, and when I see how happy and joyful he is, and okay, maybe a little mad too, my heart is warmed. I'm sure he and his owners are so grateful to that vet and to #1 for setting it all up.

  15. Je ne connaissais pas l'histoire de Fernand. Il a vraiment eu beaucoup de chance.
Mettre à mort un animal sain ça s'appelle un assassinat.
Heureusement que beaucoup de vetos se refuse à faire cet acte abominable.
Tommy a vraiment l'air d'avoir un super copain.
    Bonne soirée

  17. Fernant is a beautiful pup and that somebody would not care for him is hard to believe. Too much of that... Thank goodness the v-e-t saw him as the wonderful boy he is, saved him, and found him a loving home. Thank you, Poupounette gang, for loving him, too. You guys rock! There IS goodness in this world.

  19. We didn't amember Fernants story. We are happy the VET person played a trick on the breeder. SHAME on that breeder for wanting to put down a puppy that would eventually be a super dog!
