Manly Monday: Bibi's Great Adventure

Bibi-Chan: Hi everyone! Do I have stuff to tell you! And let me start by saying that none of it is my fault, and #1 agrees! Yesterday, #1 had a friend to lunch. Friend arrived. They went to the kitchen and enjoyed a very nice, leisurely lunch. Shortly before 3pm, friend got up to leave, and an awful site greeted them as they got to the bottom of the steps leading up to the door: the door was open! It probably had been open ever since the friend had arrived. Now, the truly amazing thing is that Tama-Chan, Sei-Chan and even Genjis-Khan were IN the house! They had repeatedly walked past an open door and ignored it! I however, was nowhere to be seen. #1's heart sank. As you know, hunting season has started and gunshots are especially numerous on Sundays.

She saw her friend off and came looking for me. As she got to the edge of the garden, near the path that goes down to the stream, she heard a familiar scream, followed by lots more screams. That particular tone of banshee screaming is special to just me and my Mama-Tama. But she couldn't se me anywhere. Eventually she started looking up, and up, and UP! And there I was, miles up in the canopy screaming blue murder!

Can you see me? I was way up there, on the side branch of a side branch, at least 4 or 5m (12-15ft) up, if not higher. And the way I was screaming was familiar to #1: it was the I am utterly and completely terrified kind of scream. What to do? She went to get her tall ladder but couldn't get it to expand properly, so she only managed to get about 3 metres or so (10 feet) up and saw that I was as too far away still. So, she called in the cavalry, and Mr. E arrived about 15 minutes later. He managed to open up the ladder to its full height and climbed up there:

But I don't know Mr. E well, so I wouldn't come to him, so he had to come down, and told #1 that she would have to go up there. Fortunately, she is not scared of heights and so she clambered up to what was about 6 or 7 (20ft) metres by then. I was still out on a limb, so to speak...

Mr. E started to throw clumps of earth up to try and coax me over to where #1 was waiting. I got closer and eventually was just a foot away from her. In a leap of faith, she took her thick glove off and presented me with her hand. In the past, I have bitten and scratched her when I have been outside on a Houbibi jaunt, but this time I just sniffed her and eventually came a little closer, just enough for her to grab me by the scruff of the neck. She managed to get a decent hold on me and started climbing down one-handed. Finally, we reached the ground and she immediately ran into the house with me, and gave me lots of treats! Needless to say, Mr. E got strong coffee and chocolate cookies!

#1 tells me that, when she was a half-grown kitten, my  Mama-Tama had indulged in similar adventures a couple of times, but nobody had ever climbed quite so high. I tell you, though: I am glad to be home!!! And yes, I am feeling a little sheepish...

  2. Your #1 is a very brave woman to go up so high on the ladder to help you out, Beebs. We are glad you weren't lost, but we hope you learned a little lesson about going too high in trees.

  3. Oooh, that Houbibi can't resist an open door. I hope that's the last excursion during hunting season.

  4. OMC Bibi! You was up there so highs!

We're glad that you're now down and safe. We like to pretend we're stcuk on the shed roof, but The Mum is wise to that one now.

  5. YIKES!

The Gs kitty cousin Tucker Scissorhands use to climb some of the tall Georgia Pines here at the Swamp... but we don't have a ladder tall enough for mature Tall Georgia Pines which can reach well over 100 feet, so we just had to keep calling him and wait. And wait. He eventually climbed back down. Hours later. Oy.

  8. Allred says that it is a lot easier to go up the tree than come down. I don't know about this cause I have never climbed a tree but I am sure glad your #1 is brave enough to go get you.

  9. Oh wow! Don't do that again! Growing up, we had a cat who got out quite a lot - we found out he loved pretzels and would just shake a pretzel bag and he would come running. I remember how heart stopping those moments always were!

  10. Bibi, you may not realize it, but you are a very lucky cat indeed to have #1 as your human. So solicitous and forgiving . . .

  11. Go Bibi!!!! Well done, but wethinks maybe you knew you had bitten off more than you could chew when you got to banshee wailing! Sometimes home is best and the welcoming hand of #1 was just so good.
You have to be careful you know, raising the blood pressure of humans is not such a good thing. So please, no more escapes. Especially not in the hunting season.

  14. That was a big climb for your #1 to make to try and tempt you to go down Bibi. Thank goodness you didn't scratch her hand and you let her carry you down. What is your next exploit - climbing Mont Blanc?

Bibi-Chan, we're so relieved you're safe! Mom had an aby-kitten years ago, who climbed up a very tall tree. The more scared she got the higher she climbed. Mom couldn't reach her with extended ladder, so she called Animal Welfare Soc. A *very* nice man came and climbed the tree (he was like a monkey). Kittie came to him when he spoke softly to her, then he popped her inside his shirt and brought her down! He said kitties have to learn to climb down backwards, cos of the way their claws point.(Mom was in tears!)..purrs to you

  18. Wow, Bibi! That was quite an adventure! I bet you are overjoyed to be back inside. That was NOT a fun Houbibi jaunt!

  19. Oh my gosh, I'm dizzy thinking about it! I wouldn't have made it even a quarter of the way up that ladder without quaking knees! You're lucky your #1 is so brave and that Mr. E was able to help too! Please don't do it again.. my heart can't take it!

  20. Mom says that is always a worry here with open doors. Hence, all our gates. As long as that gate to the front foyer is closed, the only way out for us is by the garage. And mom is always very careful about that door, but it can happen to anyone.

Bibi - we are so glad that you have that banshee scream, or #1 could have been hours looking for you. Next time the door is open, try using that same scream to alert #1 to the open route.

  21. DUDE!! Don't do that to the human, what if she'd fallen and hurt her treat-arm?

  22. Wow...that was an adventure huh? EEK!

  23. OMC Bibi, you hadded us all scared that you would be stuck in the tree. Houbibi isn't fun if you are stuck in the tree.

  24. Goodness gracious! What an adventure! Thank goodness for your very distinctive scream or you might still be up in the tree! Number one is very brave to go up so high on the ladder. Our mum isn't afraid of heights either but has truly awful balance. If she caught us , she'd probably fall from the ladder.
What we find most amazing is that the other kitties stayed in the house! Bless their hearts.

  27. OMC!!!! Beebs, that is terrifying! You are lucky #1 is a very brave climber. My mom would have popped open a can on Fancy Feast and set it at the base of the tree.....sigh.

  30. Beebs, that scares ME...never mind my momma. NEVER EVER EVER do that AGAIN! You are lucky your #1 is not afraid of heights and could make it down again with one hand holding a squirming Beebs. PLEASE don't do that any more. All of #1's physical activities with the two V's and the homestead paid off for you. She is fit as a fiddle and then some! xoxoxo
