Koi-Nobori Wednesday!

Tom: Since yesterday was a holiday here. #1 is feeling a little discombobulated, thinking that today is Monday, but it seems that we are indeed mid-week, Wednesday to be precise.

With the sun finally shining yesterday, we were able to put up our KOI-NOBORI Japanese carp streamers at last. I assisted #1 in the work, of course:

Here is the illustration for the May page from one of our Japanese calendars:

The caption says "The Koi Nobori reach up all the way to the clear May skies"

Koi (carp) Nobori (streamer) are traditionally flown from rooftops in Japan for the "Tango no Sekku" festival which used to be the boys' festival but is now designated as Children's Day, on May 5th. As they swims upstream, carp are seen as a symbol of strength.

We are flying our streamers this year in the hope that all the boys (and girls!) in the household will remain healthy over the coming year.

  8. Your koi nobori looks great! My family put up koi nobori in my home town in Japan as well.
When I was little, I went in koi when it was not yet put up and crawled around. It resulted in ripped koi...haha.
We hope everyone in your family a good health!!

  9. What a nice tradition! And a LOT less raucous than what happens here on May 5, otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo! My human is half Hispanic, but fortunately she is not a big partier.

  12. Tommy, you are such a great help! I LOVE the carp streamers and the lovely tradition! There is a Japanese garden close to us with big carp in the stream and pools that you can feed -- so pretty. I was just mentioning this to a friend the other day and said we should take our daughters.
Here's to all boys and girls in the Poupounette household staying healthy!

  13. This tradition really speaks to us! Wonder where we could find a carp streamer. It would make us very happy to see one flying at our house.
We join in wishing all boy-cats and girl-cats a happy healthy year.
