In answer to Sparkle's question, "tire socks" are an easier and less destructive (for the road) alternative to chains. They are made of extra-strong textile and they fit snugly over the tire to provide traction. But they can only be used on snow and must be removed once you hit dry road.
So we are all waiting to hear if the car has passed its MOT (the UK Ministry of Transport annual safety and roadworthiness test), so there is a lot of paw-crossing going on...
